Safety Check against Electricity
-
Safety inspection of electricity in laboratories
Electric shock and electric fire are the most common accidents in laboratories.
-
Safe use of electricity
-
General information
- - General information
- - Do not place flammable or combustible solvents near power switches.
- - Do not store unnecessary items such as experimental equipment inside the switch box (distribution board).
- - If spark or smoke is generated from an electric device such as a motor, immediately turn the power switch off and contact the electricity department.
- - A switch name and a place where the switch is used should be marked on the switch.
- - When repairing or checking electric equipment, the mark, "Under Repair" or "Under Inspection," should be displayed, and only the people concerned can access the area.
- - Earth should allow correct connection.
- - Do not allow flammable materials to contact with electrical equipment such as switches, distribution boards, and motors.
- - Switches should be opened/closed after checking the safety of the connection parts.
- - Do not use electric wiring arbitrarily without permission.
- - Do not use a defective electrical equipment or an electrical equipment in poor operating conditions.
-
Do not pull the power cable but pull the entire power cord when unplugging the power cord.
- - Daily inspection of electrical equipment (common)
- - When using electricity in a humid or damp place, mechanical equipment should be earthed and hands and feet should not be wet.
- - The cords or wiring devices for using electrical equipment should secure proper capacity and specification.
- - An earth leakage circuit breaker, which is the basic device to prevent fire or electric shock caused by power leakage, should be checked once a month or more frequently. To check if it is functioning normally, use the test button.
- - Continuous used of old electrical systems may highly result in power leakage, short circuit, or electric shock. They should be maintained/repaired.
-
General information
-
A qualified person should handle electrical equipment for its maintenance/repair. If not, very dangerous results may occur. Contact the electricity department.
- - How to safety perform electrical works
- - Before inspecting the equipment, turn the circuit switch off and unplug the equipment.
- - Before turning a switch off, wear insulated gloves if possible. With your right hand, turn the switch down while setting your face toward the other side.
- - When working on electrical systems, use non-conductive handles for tools or fixtures.
- - A live part or a part where electricity flows from electrical equipment should be insulated.
- - The circuit wiring connected to the power should not be arbitrarily changed.
- - Secure enough place for working and clean the place all the time.
- - Do not change the circuit while the power plug is connected to the power.
- - After the circuit is securely connected, connect the power plug to the power outlet.
- - Do not touch the circuit with wet hands or objects.
- - Check the connection of the earth wire connected to electrical equipment.
- - A cord line should be as short as possible.
- - Do not use a flammable material near electrical equipment.
- - Do not use multiple outlets if possible. If an additional outlet is needed, contact the electricity department to request additional installation.
